How To Make Money As a Camgirl

There are so many ways to make money as a webcam model, which is what makes it such an exciting job to do (especially if you’re prone to getting bored like me 🧐).

You can just pick one option to earn money or several. I always recommend having at least 2-3 income sources within the adult industry. Often, one site can be slow and others are thriving, and this changes every month, so by having 2-3 income sources you are guaranteeing a more secure income.

1. Live Camming – Private Cam Sessions

The most popular way to make money as a camgirl is with Private Cam Sessions. These are the kind of sites where you are logged on and waiting for a guy to enter into a private cam show with you. Sites like Xcams is great for this.

Most sites let you decide your per minute rate to charge your customer. Keep in mind, all sites pay a % to you and keep a % for themselves. So, if a site has a 60% payout, you will get 60% of what you charge.

Once a guy enters your private chat room, greet your customer and ask for his name and what he’s into, the more you know, the more you can perform a better cam show. Try to do this in the sexiest way possible, with a lot of flirtation involved.

Guys want to get the impression that you’re into them and you are also enjoying the experience. It’s great to have a range of sex toys and tools to make the cam show interesting. After you’ve completed your cam show, thank your customer for an amazing experience and the chat will end.

Each customer that receives an amazing cam show from you is a potential returning customer.

If you are somewhat shy, then one-to-one private cam shows are going to be far more suitable for you. However, the majority of these kinds of shows almost always involve using sex toys.

2. Live Camming – Token-based Cam Sites

Token-based cam sites are where I started, which I guess could be like jumping in at the deep end. But I chose this option because I prefer to entertain a room of guys and have the social aspect of things rather than have a one-on-one experience.

With token-based sites, your money comes from being tipped, your room is open and free for all to see and all your customers enter the room at the same time, some will stay in your cam room to chat and tip, others come and go.

Guys can tip for things like a boob flash, foot flash, or tip for games you can set up. You can also set a target goal of tokens that all guys can tip and contribute towards for you to get naked. There’s also the option there for guys to take you private too for a one-to-one.

Token-based cam sites like Chaturbate and Bonga Cams are great for models who aren’t shy, quite sociable and who are comfortable entertaining a group of customers. The great thing about token-based cam sites is that you don’t have to do in-depth sexual things if you don’t want to.

3. Make Money Selling Video Content

Many cam sites allow you to sell your video content too, which is an easy way to earn more money. Sites like Manyvids have this option.

When you’re live on cam it’s useful to have different things that you can sell to your customers to encourage them to tip, plus guys who have had a cam show with you are more likely to then go and purchase your video content.

4. Make Money Selling Panties

On most cam sites you can make money by selling your used panties. Not all cam sites allow this, so please make sure you check first. This is an easy way to earn some extra money.

We created this ultimate guide to selling your used panties, to help you make the most out of it.

5. Selling Nude Snapchat

Many models have a premium nude Snapchat that they charge guys for access to. This is a great way to stay engaged with your customers when you aren’t live on cam. This is a great way to build a solid fan base.

Most models charge between $20-$50 for lifetime access to their nude Snapchat. Guys expect daily (or every other day) snaps posted. You can snap nudes, your outfit for the day, what you’re up to and keep your customers updated with new content and when you’re logging on cam.

This is also a great way to make easy money while you’re on cam.

6. Fan Pages

Even though having a fan page like Onlyfans isn’t exactly camming, the majority of these platforms now have a live camming option like LoyalFans and Unlockd

I do love adult fan pages. I personally find it easier than cam sites. But that may be because I did live cam sites for many years. Token-based cam sites are great for the social element, whereas fan pages are more behind the scenes.

You can have a live cam site, a fan page or two and a video site. This is the best way to ensure you have a solid monthly income from the adult industry. This way you can also establish what you enjoy most and what makes you the most money.

CamGirl Tips – Picking a Camgirl Name

The first step to becoming a webcam model is to pick your camgirl stage name. I strongly advise you to never use your real name, for your own protection. It’s quite fun picking a stage name. If you don’t like your real name, then here is your chance to pick the name you’ve always wanted 😍.

The best way to pick a camgirl name is to look on name websites and pick the name that you like the most. It’s best to pick a two-part name, such as Emily Louise, so guys can find you better.

Think about what kind of vibe you want to aim for. This could be a cute girl next door or feisty domme vibes.

CamGirl Tips – Staying Safe As a Cam Girl

This is the most important part of becoming a camgirl. Staying safe should be your number one priority. Although most of the guys are nice and not creepy, there certainly are guys out there who could be stalkers or creepy.

This is why using a stage name and not your own name is important. No matter how close you become with any client, NEVER share your name or any other personal details.

Never share your location either, even if a guy wants to send you a gift. Often, guys will ask where you’re from. Some models like to opt for a mysterious, vague answer like “the internet” or “America”. And some models will be a little more specific but vague and say “Florida” or “London”.

Many models used to use Amazon wish lists as a way to receive gifts from clients, until some models had some safety issues with this (including me 😳) a regular client of mine bought something from my wishlist, but this item didn’t arrive and when he chased it up with Amazon, they revealed my address to him. So, it’s best to avoid using this service to protect yourself.

Throughout your camgirl career, you will be asked by guys to meet up. This is something I’ve personally never felt safe doing and I do recommend that you avoid doing this too. Guys will try to seduce you with money and gifts, in a bid to get you to meet up with them, but it’s simply not worth the risk involved.

How Much Can You Earn As a Webcam Model?

how to become a webcam model

The million-dollar question that everyone wants to know, yet it’s the hardest question to answer. As you can imagine, the numbers vary widely.

On average, a webcam model earns $2000-$4000 per month. But this amount depends on how many hours you work, what kind of websites you cam on and how well you interact with your clients.

Most models cam on average 80-100 hours per month and those models will usually see a higher income. Becoming a successful camgirl is all about consistency. By creating a regular log on schedule and entertaining your room well, is the key to success.

It also takes time to build a solid client base, it takes around a year of consistent camming to build a group of regulars who keep coming back to pay you. And this is something you will continuously build, as clients come and go.

Many new cam girls experience an influx of great income in the first month or so. This is because you’re a fresh face on the scene and guys are intrigued. So new models can be showered with good money and lots of interest, and then it dies 😭.

Yup….it dies like an unwatered flower and you’re left wondering what the hell went wrong.

Nothing did, it just takes time to build a solid regular income, you need the patience of a saint in the first 6 months of camming, you need to ride out the quiet times until you get to a place where you have a room of at least 20-30 regulars. It’s so worth it in the end.

Best Cam Girl Sites

Picking the best cam sites when you start camming can be a struggle, some sites may be unsuccessful for you and other sites will be amazing for you. Nobody can truly tell you which one will work for you.

But I do recommend you decide whether you want to do private one-on-one cam shows if you’re a little shy and don’t mind masturbating on cam. Or whether you are more sociable and prefer to entertain a room of guys and work for tips.

Below I have narrowed down some popular and great cam sites for models, the payout percentage and their features.

How To Promote Yourself As a Cam Girl

promote onlyfans

90% of webcam sites do provide on-site traffic, so not much promoting yourself isn’t really required. That’s why camming is a great start for new models. But what you do want to do is build your customer base and keep guys coming back to your cam room, here are some ways to do this.

1. Twitter

Most webcam models have Twitter and they use this to direct guys from their cam room, to follow them on Twitter. Make sure your camming platform allows you to promote outside links first, as some sites don’t allow this.

Twitter is a great place to gather your guys, so you can let them know when you’re logging on cam, promote any new content you have made or even direct them to another site if you ever leave your main camming platform.

2. Free or Nude Premium Snapchat

Another way to gather your customer base is to have a free or premium Snapchat. Again, this is a place where you can continuously engage with your customers, let them know when you’re on cam and promote any new content.

Many models either charge $20-$50 for a premium snapchat subscription for lifetime access (if you’re posting kinky pics) and some models will have a free Snapchat where they are just safe for work pictures.

3. Reddit

Reddit is a place where I hype up for promoting adult services, but because camming sites take around 40-50% in fees from our payout and they provide a good level of on-site traffic, I’m reluctant to send any traffic to the site.

However, Reddit is a great platform to promote your fan pages, if you have one. Or if you want to accept one-to-one Skype cam shows.

The Empty Cam Room

The dreaded empty cam room 😱

We have all been there and it’s one of the most challenging things about being a new camgirl. When you first log onto any camming platform, it’s quiet and it’s awkward. So, please don’t worry if this happens to you.

Attracting guys into your room can be difficult at first. Guys will flicker across the previews on all models and see which model takes their fancy first.

So you’ll need to have a smile on your face or even be seductively caressing your body or have the webcam facing your butt or between your legs (with panties on) to attract guys into your room.

If a model is sitting there, doing nothing and not smiling, then guys will not be inclined to enter the room.

Once guys enter your room, say hello and you could ask them what their name is or where they are from or what their kinks are. You just want to have a friendly and welcoming conversation. However, there is a limit. You don’t want to spend any longer than 5 minutes chatting with any one guy who hasn’t paid you.

So many freeloaders will leach onto new models, taking up all their time and attention by chatting away, without paying you a dime.

This attention onto a guy who has zero intention of paying you is taking your attention away from guys in the room who do have money.

Playing non-heavy, not too loud music within your cam room is a great way to break up any awkward silence.

On some cam sites like Chaturbate, they have three types of viewers. Free viewers (guys who have never topped up their account), guests ( guys who don’t even have an account) and premiums (guys who have topped up at least once).

You can allow certain members to talk or not. Most models don’t allow free viewers or guests to talk as they don’t have money. But if you are a new model, then I do encourage you to ban guests (they truly are the sewerage you don’t want) but to allow free viewers to talk. Especially on days when your room is quiet.

So, please don’t panic if your room is quiet. This happens to almost every model. As we move forward in this guide, I’m going to uncover some cam room entertainment, which should help draw those guys in.

Dealing With Guys

Horny men aren’t the easiest pack to control 😅

But if you don’t keep them under control, they can take advantage. This is why I have laid out some different types of unruly guys you may encounter and how to deal with them.

The guy who wants all the attention for very little or no money

Aka a freeloader. These are the guys who are pretty vocal and are attention-leaches. They want all the models’ attention for very little or no money. And they can often put off decent guys from staying in your room.

Now, these guys do offer some entertainment value and they do keep the room talking, but make sure you don’t engage with these guys too much and ignore others.

The guy who demands free things

You wouldn’t think someone would have the cheek to demand a boob flash…
But believe me, they do 😡
Those guys just deserve a ban, no angry response. Just a ban.

The guy who wants to control you with his money

I, unfortunately, had a lot of these guys and it doesn’t seem like a bad problem to have, after all his spending loads of money, but his also gaining too much control over you.

These guys will woo you with big tips and lots of money, but then they want to tell you what to do, expect all your time and it’s almost like they are in a one-sided relationship with you.

If you do come across these guys, take the money they are giving but make sure you don’t lead them on and don’t bow down to their every command. Obviously, you’re expected to give something in return and show this guy more attention. But make sure you’re never pushed into doing things you don’t want to do or ignoring everyone else who could be paying you.

The guy who insults you

Trolls 🙄….you’ll get them, we all get them.

They are attention-seeking guys who will come into your cam room and throw any insult your way. Whatever you do, don’t react or respond. Simply quietly ban this loser. Giving them a response or reaction is exactly what they want.

The guy who wants to pay on PayPal or pay after the show

This is a scam and a way for guys to rip you off. They will often ask to pay via PayPal or request that you do a show and they’ll pay you afterwards. But they have no intention of paying or will reverse any PayPal payment.

Any guy who asks for this, ban them.
(Side tip – Never accept PayPal for adult services, it’s against PayPal TOS)

Cam Room Entertainment To Make Money

Keeping your customers entertained is so important and a lot of your potential success depends on it. For camgirls who are on sites that are private based, you won’t need a great deal of entertainment. But being chatty and polite is important.

But if you are camming on a token-based platform like Chaturbate then these cam room tips will help you keep your guys coming back for more.

Playing Music

Most webcam models do play music while they are streaming, it takes the attention off of awkward silences. It’s best to keep music light and nothing too heavy and to keep it at a lower volume so that your guys can hear it, but not so you have to shout over it.

Being Talkative

As the focus is on you, being bubbly and chatty is a great way to run a successful cam room. Great conversational topics like asking the room what their favourite movies are, the best places they have travelled to or what are their favourite meals, are a great way to keep your room lively. Bringing in my sense of humour definitely won over many guys and they continued to return to my room.

Room Games & Wheel Spins

On sites like Chaturbate and Myfreecams, it’s common to incorporate room games and wheel spins. On Myfreecams there are tools like “CharlesBot” which has a variety of room games available, and on Chaturbate they have their own built-in room games too.

Wheel spins was a particularly popular game in my room. You can either have a physical wheel spinner or a digital one on the screen, which you can get with OBS.

Making an effort on special occasions

This is the fun part of camming, on special occasions like Halloween, Christmas, your birthday, and your camming anniversary are all a fantastic way to bring entertainment into your camroom. A chance to dress up, decorate your room and incorporate fun games. You’ll find most models on token-based platforms make the most of these fun events.

Creating a tip menu

Just like we have on our fan pages, cam girls also have tip menus. This is the main way to earn your tips in your cam room. You can include the following on your tip menu

  • Tips for nude flashes
  • Tips for foot flashes
  • Tips to play a specific song
  • Tips to mute you (to stop talking for 5 min) and then a tip to unmute
  • Add as a friend
  • To spank yourself

Becoming a Non-Nude Camgirl & Make Money

When you become a camgirl, you don’t always have to be a nude model. There are plenty of successful non-nude webcam models and nothing is stopping you from becoming one.

It goes without saying, when you become a non-nude camgirl it is a slightly harder grind and more work does go into it than nude models, but you can still be successful.

As a non-nude model, the focus is mainly on your personality, so having a bubbly and chatty vibe is crucial to becoming successful. Most non-nude webcam models wear sexy flirtatious outfits that tease but don’t show all. They also cultivate this teasing, seductive attitude to “work the crowd” so there are still elements of sexual vibes but in a way that doesn’t reveal all.

If you do decide to become a non-nude camgirl, I recommend that you find a non-nude model on Myfreecams or Chaturbate and watch their cam feed. Observe how they interact with their guys and how they tease the room. You’ll also notice how they get creative with their tip menu and often use the Lovense Toy, which is a godsend for non-nude webcam models.

For a large portion of my camming career, I was a non-nude model and my income was just as good compared to when I was a nude model. It certainly took a bit longer to build a loyal customer base and I had to be more creative in how I made my tips. But I realized that there is a very big portion of guys who really enjoy a non-nude model. Most of these guys are looking for a GFE (Girlfriend experience).

So, if this is the path you want to take, give it a go and study fellow non-nude models first.

Wearing a Mask While Camming

For those of you who prefer to stay anonymous as a camgirl, you can still earn good money and keep yourself hidden. While camming with a mask on isn’t common practice, there are still models who have done this successfully. It does take a bit longer to build a following and it’s unlikely that you will earn the same amount as models who do show their face. You may be content with that.

I recently wrote an ultimate guide on camming while wearing a mask, in this article I uncover the best way to become a camgirl and stay anonymous and some unique alternatives to a mask. You can check out that article here.

Developing Your Camgirl Character

So by now, you may have figured out your camgirl name, but have you given much thought into your camgirl character?

I’m going to help you figure this out. It’s important to figure out who your character is before you become a webcam model. My main advice is to stay as close to your own personality as possible, otherwise trying to be someone you’re not will be very draining.

Your camgirl character represents how you look, how you dress, the type of vibe in your room and the kind of guys you’re going to attract. Below are some common examples of camgirl characters you could opt for –

The cute, girly, feminine, girl next door vibe. The model who is sweet and polite but with a naughty side. Guys enjoy the innocent girl next door vibes while knowing she can be naughty too. This kind of character mostly represents “the girlfriend experience” and will attract guys who want to have the model as a girlfriend kind of vibe. You can do this character as a nude or non-nude.

Kinky woman vibes. This model is very kinky and doesn’t have many barriers when it comes to performing sexual acts. This model can talk really dirty and guys love the fact that she’s into almost anything. Obviously, this character could only be a nude model.

Domme, fetish model, cold bitch vibes. This model is in charge, she has a naturally dominant nature and guys love the power she holds over them. A great seductress and knows exactly how to use her power to turn men on. Will mostly attract guys who are submissive and guys who have a particular fetish. This character can be done as a nude or non-nude camgirl.

Milf vibes. This model is usually 35+ and has a very kinky side to her but also a mild sense of being in charge. Men attracted to his model have a fantasy of how filthy she can be from her experience. The audience is usually younger men, looking to experience this fantasy. I find milfs tend to earn far more being nude.

E-girl vibes/Cosplay model. This model is usually under 25 and into gaming or cosplay. Quite unique in looks with cool quirky outfits, coloured hair and cosplay outfits. Guys who are into gaming are very attracted to these models because they love a model with something in common with them. Often, these models will go gaming while live on cam. I would say this also has GFE vibes to it. Both nude and non-nude models could pull off this character.

Obviously, there are far more characters and I absolutely encourage you to create your own unique character. But this gives you a guide to go by and what to expect. When you create your character, think about the kind of audience you will attract and what their fantasies are. It will help you target your main audience.

Camgirl Sex Toys

Can you even be a camgirl without a bunch of sex toys?

Yes, you can, but where’s the fun in that?

The variety of sex toys on the market is pretty impressive and they suit all models, from those who love the extravaganza of sex machines to models who prefer something less intrusive and on the comfortable side.

Any model who cams would probably agree that the Lovense sex toy range is such a big money maker for them. It pretty much pays for itself on your first 1-2 cam shifts and it keeps guys entertained. Here are my two favourite toys that have made me the most money –

The Lovense Ferri Sex Toy – $112

The Lovense Ferri is my favourite interactive toy from the Lovense range. It comfortably fits into your panties, without any insertion needed (which is perfect for a long cam shift). And it’s quiet, which makes it ideal for those who are camming discretely.

The Lush 3 Sex Toy – $112
Best webcam model sex toys

The Lush 3 sex toy is much loved by so many camgirls. It’s powerful, it hits the G-spot and just like most other Lovense toys, it’s quiet. This sex toy is designed for both insertion and clitorial stimulation.

Why are Lovense toys so special?

The Lovense toys are all interactive sex toys. They are programmed to work with their app so someone can control the vibration of the toy from 100 miles away, which gives a personal experience. Not just that, Lovense toys are also built with webcam sites in mind and they can vibrate to specific noises, like “the tip noise”. So when a guy tips, the toy vibrates.

Guys absolutely love being a part of your orgasm, so the fact that they can actively make you orgasm by tipping you is a big turn on for them. You can also set different levels of tip vibrating strengths, how long it vibrates and different strengths for bigger tips, which encourages guys to tip bigger amounts.

Camgirl Equipment

This year I created a Guide to CamGirl Equipment article which you can read here. But here I want to highlight the main equipment you’ll need as a new webcam model. These are products that I personally use and recommend. When you are new to camming you won’t want to splash out too much, but you also want adequate equipment, so you can get off to a great start.

8 Camgirl Equipment Essentials that every camgirl needs

Camgirl Outfits

Picking out camgirl outfits is the fun part of being a webcam model. This is your chance to really show off your camgirl character. Here is a range of outfits that are sexy outfits for any new model. I’m also a lover of playful promises. They have a beautiful selection of lingerie.

Playful Promises
Aranmei Women Sexy Lingerie Bodysuit $17.98
Donnalla Women Sexy Lingerie Set Two Piece Lace Bra and Panty Set $17.99
Avidlove Women Lingerie Lace Chemise $19.99

Camgirl Ideas and Tips

After so many years of being a webcam model, you really learn so much. I’ve made plenty of mistakes and great choices, so I can now pass my advice over to you. Overall, camming has been a fantastic career choice for me, which has given me freedom with my time and a fantastic income. So here are some important tips I have for you.

Don’t let guys get too attached

This is my first piece of advice because this was my biggest mistake. I became far too friendly and close with my loyal customers. Eventually, this led to some guys not tipping anymore because they “had their foot in the door” and some guys even tried to control me.

Be friendly but keep them at arms length and treat them all equally, even if they are great tippers. So many guys are looking to control models with money.

Don’t get too drunk on cam

I’ve seen so many models drink themselves into oblivion on cam and they do this nightly. I believe this is because it takes courage to go live on cam and you need to be bubbly and chatty. Some models start drinking before cam to calm their nerves, but then this becomes too much of a reliance. The problem is not everyone can handle their drink well and can end up saying regrettable things or doing embarrassing things. So I suggest keeping it to a minimum or on special occasions.

Don’t share too much information

We’ve spoken about not sharing your name, location, address etc to keep yourself safe. But this also applies to personal information too, things about your personal relationships or past history. It’s fine to share interests, hobbies, pets and so on.

If one site isn’t working for you, try another.

I see many new models who join a site and after 3 months they are still struggling to do well on that platform. With fan pages, my advice would be to keep plugging away, but when it comes to cam sites I think it’s best to jump ship. I would always recommend giving any cam site website a minimum of 3 months of hard work before you change platforms.
Sometimes not every platform will be right for you, whereas others will be.

I hope this cam girl guide has helped you, overall becoming a webcam model has been a great career choice for me and it has really helped my confidence and I’ve learnt so many new skills. I wish you luck in your new career path. 🤩
